Managing Type 2 Diabetes at Home
Type 2 diabetes is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases in the Arab community in Israel. Although it is a chronic condition without a complete cure, proper home management allows patients to live a fully normal and active life and significantly reduces complications.
Understanding Your Key Diabetes Numbers
Knowing your numbers is the starting point. Normal fasting blood glucose is below 100 mg/dL; 100–125 indicates prediabetes, which warrants intervention. HbA1c should be below 7% for a well-controlled diabetic patient. Measure your blood sugar regularly and record your readings — data is your doctor's best tool.
A Daily Routine That Helps Control Blood Sugar
- Walking 30 minutes daily significantly reduces insulin resistance.
- Reducing refined carbohydrates (white bread, white rice, sugar) and replacing with whole-grain alternatives.
- Distributing meals into 5 small portions instead of 3 large ones to maintain stable blood sugar.
- Drinking adequate water daily — dehydration raises blood sugar.
- Getting adequate sleep (7–8 hours) improves insulin sensitivity.
Important Warning
If you feel dizzy, experience sudden sweating, or shaking — this may be low blood sugar. Immediately consume fast-absorbing sugar (juice, candy) then call your doctor.
Medications and Insulin: How to Manage Them at Home
Never adjust your medication or insulin dose on your own without consulting your doctor. If you miss a dose, do not double the next one. Store insulin in the refrigerator away from the door (2–8°C) and never freeze it. Inject into fatty skin — rotate injection sites to avoid nodule formation.
Preventable Diabetes Complications
- Retinopathy (eyes): fundus examination at least once a year.
- Nephropathy (kidneys): urine analysis to detect protein in early stages.
- Neuropathy (numbness): pay attention to foot health and avoid wounds.
- Cardiovascular disease: controlling cholesterol and blood pressure is as important as controlling blood sugar.
A diabetic patient who knows their numbers, understands their body, and works with their doctor — lives a completely normal life. Diabetes is manageable, not a sentence of suffering.
